Michael Rossi

who is

Michael Rossi

I design software, then I build it.

Howdy — I'm Rossi, a product designer in Dallas. Twelve years in, I've learned the interesting problems are never the pretty ones: the tangled workflow, the requirements that fight each other, the feature engineering swears can't ship by Friday. I've done that work inside big enterprises, at a high-growth company, and through my own studio. It's the work I want.

Selected work

Five projects. The common thread: a complicated product that needed one person holding strategy, design, systems, and the front-end together.

TIAA Financial services

Scaling an enterprise financial design system

TIAA's product groups were each rebuilding the same components a little differently. As the Experience Design Lead, I set the standards, the states, and the governance, then made the system easy enough to adopt that teams stopped forking it.

UnitedHealth Group Healthcare

Accessible transportation benefits for health-plan members

People were booking rides to medical appointments through a slow, multi-step flow that left them unsure it had even worked. I rebuilt it around fewer steps and obvious confirmation, and tested it with real members.

Nutrient Developer tools & SaaS

Bringing five products into one developer platform

Nutrient had sprawled into five separate product sites and brands. Through my studio, I designed one product-led platform and built it in React and Astro, so it read as a single company without flattening the products underneath.

Lowe's Pro Supply B2B commerce

Streamlining ordering for professional contractors

Lowe's Pro Supply's contractors run the same ordering tasks all day. I cut the navigation depth and the context-switching so routine work stopped fighting them.

Synquery Expert networks & SaaS

Defining an early-stage expert-network product

Synquery is an early-stage expert-network platform. I worked straight with the founders to define the core product and ship the marketing site.

Here's what I actually think: most enterprise software is bad because nobody owns the whole thing. Strategy hands off to design, design hands off to engineering, and the intent leaks out at every seam. I don't work that way. I stay on it, from the first messy question to the code that ships. Give me a product with real complexity underneath and a team that needs someone to keep it coherent, and that's where I'm most useful.

Employment is direct. Consulting clients came through Push Refresh, my studio. Brand work was as lead or senior designer at Bottle Rocket.

I'm looking for a Staff or Principal role where I get to stay on the tools. I'll lead the strategy and sit in the meetings, but I do my best work with my hands in the actual product — design and code both.

Still an IC at heart, not just a manager.
